The Company

We are now seeking to hire a Technical Designer with a strong foundation in packaging design (corrugate bias preferred) to ultimately be based out of our forthcoming, brand-new Innovation Lab in the Northwest.

The Packaging Designer role:
As part of the Design & Innovation Team, the role will play a critical part in the development and success of The Macfarlane Packaging Innovation Lab facilities.
You will provide innovative and tailored design solutions for both our existing and potential customers. You will work with our customers to ensure not only direct cost savings are achieved, but also indirect cost savings are met, through constantly striving to make improvements in productivity for our customers.

Technical Designer Key Responsibilities

  • Deliver cost saving and value add solutions, in line with customer briefs, that are optimised for efficient manufacture and to the required performance standard.
  • Operate the CAD cutting table, Digital Printer and finishing equipment to produce customer samples to the required quality standard
  • Operate testing equipment and produce test reports to the required quality standard
  • Produce design documents to the required quality standard including specifications, artwork layouts, 3D visuals, animations, operational layouts, optimisation reports and value presentations
  • Attend customer meetings and present design solutions as required
  • Carryout ongoing maintenance programmes and updating of facility equipment and services

Do you have the correct profile?

You will already have a demonstrably strong track record of customer engagement and design solution delivery. As part of this, we would expect you to be comfortable with…

  • Capably listening to the customer’s needs and be able to communicate in a professional and coherent manner
  • Taking design briefs and using the latest CAD equipment you will be creating industry leading samples for customers
  • Working to provide tailored solutions to all our customers, whilst ensuring you take a caring approach to their business requirements and challenges
  • Accessing consumer tastes, market trends and product details to conceptualize package designs
  • Working closely with our customers you will ensure goals are met, whilst considering branding, performance, and cost implications
  • Generating design reports on an ongoing basis to support proposals made to our customers.

Technical Designer – Key Skills required:

The following are essential to apply for this opportunity…

  • CAD experience (Kasemake / Artios)
  • Track record of cost saving projects
  • Demonstrate cost-effective packaging projects that meets customer needs
  • Adobe CC experience (Illustrator / Photoshop)
  • Office 365 experience (Excel / PowerPoint)
  • 3D experience (SketchUp Pro or similar)
  • Full valid driving license

It would also be advantageous if you can bring any of the following…

  • Structural design skills
  • In-depth knowledge across a broad range of packaging types
  • Graphic design skills
  • Specialist knowledge in packaging area other than corrugated packaging
  • Ideally you will demonstrate a good knowledge of all packaging materials & their uses
  • An understanding of packaging manufacturing processes and techniques
  • Knowledge of performance testing procedures (ISTA)
